Academic Excellence
Many factors combine to create a learning environment for academic excellence at Knollwood Elementary School. Knollwood was among an unprecedented 32 schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) recognized as a California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education, an honor that recognizes exemplary educational programs and academic excellence. This represents 7 percent of the District's 450 elementary schools, a truly remarkable feat. This is the largest number of schools honored since the State's recognition program was implemented in 1985. Twenty-five of the 32 schools, including Knollwood have student enrollments with populations that live below the poverty levels. These schools are considered Title 1 schools, which receive additional federal assistance.
We are truly a student centered community with high expectations, which is confirmed by achieving API scores well over 800, four years in a row, and by being honored with the California Distinguished School Award in 2006. The California Distinguished school award is a highly sought after, prestigious honor that has been in place for 21 years. This award allows the State of California to recognize schools across the state for their educational programs that include high expectations for all its students, implementation of state-adopted standards and collaborative leadership.
Our highly trained and dedicated teachers provide a rigorous curriculum and focus on the individual needs of all students. Because of our small student population, at just over 350 students, our office and teaching staff get to know all the children personally. At Knollwood, everyone is family. Our exceptionally loyal and hard working PTA further strengthens our school. The parents at Knollwood are extremely supportive and involved. They have successfully raised $15,000 a year to enable children to receive a well-rounded education that includes weekly PE instruction from our local YMCA. Additionally, our parents help in successful school-wide events -- such as our Spring Fling as our family fun day, Math and Science night, Read Across America, and the Book Fair.
